Happy New Year

So today is the first day of 2006 and I've been contemplating my resolutions for this year. Since none of my previous years' resolutions ever panned out to anything substantial, I'm thinking of a new approach this year. Instead of "resolutions", I'm thinking minor "adjustments" are a better idea.

My biggest "adjustment" for the year -- eat less. Weighing in at almost 200 pounds, the time has come to get serious about my weight. I can just see myself becoming an American statistic... 42 years old, over weight and struck down by a heart attack... not my idea of a happy ending. But I don't want to just fail at yet another diet. How many have I failed at already during my liftime? Too many to count. So this year, a new approach. Don't think about dieting or deprivation. Think simply about taking in less. Instead of counting calories, pay attention to the size of your plate and how much food is actually on it. Instead of having a late night snack of cookies, think to yourself "eat less"... and skip the late night snack all together... not because I'm dieting, but because I simply want to eat less food.

Next adjustment for the year -- talk less. It seems most of my problems at work or with anyone have to do with talking way too much... saying way too much.. and giving far too much information. I'm going to try and just talk less. When you hear that smart ass comment boiling up inside your head, simply say to yourself, "talk less" rather than sharing the comment and perhaps opening a problem that never should have been opened. This also equates to emailing less at work... my emails at work have been the center piece of my problems... less emails should equate to less problems at work.

Final adjustment for the year -- exercise more. Here is one behavior I want more, more, more of. I feel so good when I exercise regularly... I want to make sure I make more time for exercise. I figure if I'm smoking less, eating less and talking less, I'll have lots more time for exercise.

Enough adjustments...We did have a great night last night... Gregg and I made it past midnight for the first time in years. Joseph had a great night with two friends staying over. The weather has been horrible with heavy wind and rain... a dreary start to the new year, but it didn't damper our spirits.Well, it's been a great holiday... today and tomorrow are my final days off from work and then back to the drudgery. I'll end this note with a great pic of the family on Christmas Day (also the first day of Hanukkah). Enjoy!

Until next time....
